I recently delivered training to staff on the needs of offenders with a learning disability in a criminal justice setting.
Many people are still surprised to hear how many prisoners may have learning disabilities
Prisoners with learning disabilities are five times more likely than other prisoners to experience control and restraint, three times more likely to experience segregation and three times more likely to have depression or anxiety.
There is a real danger of learning disabled offenders spending more time in prison than necessary
With 25% of the prison population having an IQ of less than 80 and a further 25% with a ‘hidden disability’ it seems timely and appropriate to try and meet the needs of this large group of people.

If young people are not assessed properly and their needs not identified and met, they can fall through the net at mainstream schools and miss out on the support that they need to develop.
