Hanifa’s blog is about Ramadan

14 July 2015 0 Comments

It’s been a while since my last blog so for this one I thought I’d share my experience on this year’s Ramadan. Ramadan is the ninth Islamic month when Muslims fast for the whole month. This means that Muslims cannot eat and drink from pre-dawn to sunrise. We wake up around 2am in the morning for breakfast and we are not able to eat again until after 9pm. For breakfast I usually eat cereals, breads, sometimes it may be rice too. For dinner I will eat fresh and dried fruits, rice and oily foods made with halal meat.

Ramadan started on Thursday 18th June 2015 and ends on Thursday 16th or Friday 17th July 2015 – it depends when the new moon starts. Because Ramadan is happening in June/July this year the fasting is tiring but we drink a lot of water at 2am and we take a few naps during the day. My usual working hours are 1pm-4pm but my manager has told me to come in earlier so I can get home and rest in the afternoon (and catch the tennis because I love to watch Wimbledon). I am taking some annual leave at the end of Ramadan to rest because working and fasting is hard, but I am looking forward to Eid. Eid is a celebration of the end of fasting and we celebrate with other families and relatives around London and enjoy a big feast.
